Cold Air Intakes, Easy and Inexpensive Horsepower

Jeep Wrangler with Volant Air Duct System.

Cold air intakes, they are not a new technology as far as performance cars are concerned. K&N as well as other manufacturers make relatively inexpensive intake systems for just about any make and model on the road today. Nearly all cold air intake systems are street legal in all 50 states and do not void the manufacturers warranty(there are some exceptions). One of benefits of adding a cold air intake is increased horsepower, this is accomplished by increasing the air flow directly into the engines intake system. Why is cold air better than warm you ask, for every 10 degrees cooler the air coming into your engine you can expect about a 1% increase in power. Cold air intakes accomplishes this by relocating the intake positioning away from the engine block and closer to the radiator or the inner fender. Because your engine is basically nothing but a big air pump, increasing the airflow will also increase your vehicles gas efficiency. Depending on the size of your engine, you may be looking at a 1-2 MPG increase.

Another great reason to add a cold air intake to your automobile is for the look. When purchasing a cold air intake, there are many on the market. There are black plastic intakes, but you can get them in a wide range of colors and finishes. Carbon fiber cold air intake system look great but, the price tag increases greatly.

As far as the installation of a cold air intake, it’s simple! Do you know what a screw driver is? What about a socket set? Yes, most installations of cold air intake system even for mechanically challenged takes no more than a hour and a half. If you’re not up to getting a little dirt under your fingernails or just don’t have the interest, there are plenty of speed shops that would be happy to take on a gravy job like that.
